Makruk

Makruk

Thai Chess — ancient strategy game with unique pieces and promotion rules.

Rules / Config

  1. Makruk is played on an 8x8 board. The setup differs from Western chess — pawns start on the third rank and there are no bishops.
  2. The queen (Met) moves one square diagonally. The bishop (Khon) moves one square forward or diagonally. Pawns promote to Met upon reaching the sixth rank.
  3. Counting rules apply in the endgame: if one side has no pieces (only a king), the opponent must checkmate within a set number of moves or the game is drawn.
