Xiangqi

Xiangqi

Chinese Chess — command generals, elephants, cannons and chariots across the river to checkmate your opponent.

Rules / Config

  1. Each side starts with 16 pieces: General, 2 Advisors, 2 Elephants, 2 Horses, 2 Chariots, 2 Cannons, and 5 Soldiers.
  2. Pieces move on intersections (not squares). Generals and Advisors are confined to the Palace (3×3 area). Elephants cannot cross the river.
  3. Cannons capture by jumping over exactly one piece. Soldiers gain lateral movement after crossing the river.
  4. Win by checkmating the opponent's General. Stalemate (no legal moves) also counts as a loss.
